THIS TOOLS CHECKLIST IS DESIGNED TO HELP YOU PREPARE AND PACK SO THAT YOU CAN DO REPAIRS ON THE TRAIL. 

 

PLIERS: YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY PLIES, RIGHT? IF YOU GO BY THE LIST OF PLIES WE RECOMMEND HAVING AS PART OF YOUR RIG TOOL KIT, THEN THE ANSWER TO THAT IS A RESOUNDING YES! WE SUGGEST NEEDLE-NOSE, VISE-GRIP, CHANNEL LOCK, WIRE-CUTTER, SNAP RING, LINESMAN, AND CRIMPER PLIERS ALL BE IN YOUR RIG TOOL KIT.

FLASHLIGHTS: WE RECOMMEND A HEADLAMP, HANDHELD FLASHLIGHT, AND A MAGNETIC WORK LIGHT. THE REASONS YOU NEED FLASHLIGHTS ARE PRETTY OBVIOUS- 1) IF SOMETHING HAPPENS AT NIGHT, YOU NEED LIGHT TO SEE WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND 2) EVEN DURING THE DAY, THERE ARE PARTS OF THE RIG THAT YOU MIGHT NEED SOME DIRECT LIGHT TO REALLY SEE WHAT IS GOING ON.

SCREWDRIVERS: YOU ARE GOING TO WANT TO HAVE PHILIPS (SIZES #2 AND #3) AND STANDARD/SLOTTED SCREW DRIVERS IN YOUR RIG TOOL KIT FOR A MULTITUDE OF REASONS.

MULTI-METER: HAVING A 12V MULTI METER OR TEST LIGHT TAKES A LOT OF GUESSWORK OUT OF CHASING DOWN ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. TEST LIGHTS ARE PERFECT TO HELP YOU QUICKLY INSPECT FOR BLOWN FUSES AND OTHER SIMPLE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS LIKE LIGHT BULBS NOT WORKING. FOR MORE COMPLEX ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSIS WORK, A QUALITY MULTI-METER IS A MUST.

HAMMERS: WE SUGGEST HAVING BOTH A MEDIUM MALLET AND A 5LB SLEDGE HAMMER ON HAND FOR WHEN YOU NEED TO KNOCK SOME STUFF LOOSE. THE HAMMERS CAN BE USED TO REMOVE DRUM BRAKES, BALL JOINTS, AND TIE RODS, OR WHENEVER SOMETHING NEED A LITTLE EXTRA CONVINCING TO COME LOOSE. USE THE SMALLER HAMMER WHEN YOU NEED TO BE EXTRA CAREFUL NOT TO BREAK SOMETHING.

RATCHET AND SOCKET SET WITH EXTENSIONS: YOU'LL WANT BASIC RANGE OF 1/4”, 3/8”, AND 1/2” RATCHETS WITH A SET OF COMPATIBLE SOCKETS IN A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT SIZES, AS WELL AS SPECIALTY SOCKETS LIKE LARGE AXEL NUT SOCKETS AND A SPARK PLUG SOCKET. YOU SHOULD ALSO HAVE EXTENSIONS TO HELP YOU WORK ON MORE HARD TO REACH PLACES. OUR RATCHET AND SOCKET SET IS HIGH ON THE LIST OF OUR MOST USED TOOLS.

 

TORCH: TORCHES ARE BADASS. WE RECOMMEND HAVING A TORCH ADAPTER THAT CAN FIT ON SMALL PROPANE CANISTERS USED WITH CAMPING STOVES. TORCHES CAN BE USED TO CUT METAL, BUT ALSO TO REMOVE RUSTED BOLTS AND NUTS.

ELECTRICAL TAPE: IF YOUV'E GOT TO FIX SOME MINOR ELECTRICAL WIRING ISSUES, HAVING ELECTRICAL TAPE TO PATCH THINGS UP CAN COME IN HANDY. IT TAKES UP VERY LITTLE ROOM AND WEIGHS NOTHING, SO IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO HAVE JUST IN CASE.

PRY BAR: SOMETIMES YOU JUST NEED A LITTLE EXTRA LEVERAGE TO MAKE SOMETHING WORK. ENTER THE GENIUS INVENTION OF THE PRY BAR. PRY BARS ARE PERFECT TO REMOVE CALIPERS, WHEEL CAPS, AND DRIVE SHAFTS, BUT ALSO GIVE YOU THAT EXTRA LEVERAGE WHEN YOU NEED TO PRY SOMETHING IN (OR OUT) OF PLACE. A MEDIUM PRY BAR SHOULD DO THE JOB FOR MOST OF YOUR ON THE TRAIL FIX IT NEEDS.

WRENCHES: WRENCHES PERFORM THE SAME FUNCTION AS RATCHETS AND SOCKETS (TIGHTENING AND LOOSENING FASTENERS) BUT THERE ARE SOME DIFFERENCES AND SITUATIONS IN WHICH ONE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER. YOU'RE TRUCK TOOL KIT SHOULD INCLUDE A SET OF COMMON SIZES WRENCHES (WE SUGGEST COMBINATION WRENCHES THAT HAVE ONE OPEN END AND ONE BOX END) YOU SHOULD ALSO HAVE WRENCHES IN ANY LARGER SIZES THAT YOU MAY NEED FOR YOUR SPECIFIC TYPE OF VEHICLE AND A SET OF ALLEN WRENCHES. WE ALSO RECOMMEND YOU ADD AN ADJUSTABLE WRENCH TO YOUR TRUCK TOOL KIT FOR ANY ODD SIZED NUTS AN BOLTS YOU MAY COME ACROSS THAT YOU DON'T HAVE A SIZE SPECIFIC WRENCH FOR.
